Free Cell Phones for Domestic Violence Victims
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has developed a way to put to good use the thousands of smuggled cell phones that state prison staff confiscate from inmates each year. CDCR’s Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services (OVSRS) is leading the effort to restore the cell phones and donate them to domestic violence organizations, putting free phones in the hands of people who can then dial 911 in an emergency.
While some CDCR institutions have been donating cell phones to local organizations for a few years, CDCR last October expanded this endeavor into a statewide project. OVSRS is compiling a list of organizations throughout California that would benefit from cell phone donations. To add your suggestions to the list, contact Mike Young at mike.young@cdcr.ca.gov, or by phone at (916) 341-7044.
