CA Secretary of State Alex Padilla Statement on USPS Suspension of Operational Changes

SACRAMENTO, CA – Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement in response to US Postmaster General DeJoy’s statement that US Postal Service operational changes would be suspended until after the General Election.

“We will not let our democracy become a casualty of this pandemic. And we will not let our postal service become another victim of the Trump Administration.”

“Given this Administration’s track record with the truth, seeing is believing. My office will continue constant communication with the US Postal Service, and will continue to monitor for any signs of disruption to service.”

“It is not enough to merely suspend operational changes, they need to be reversed. There should not be cuts to postal service, particularly during this pandemic. Postal workers are essential workers—they are essential to our democracy, our economy, and our healthcare systems."

"Postal workers deserve clarity from US Postal Service leadership on why so many operations changes occurred. And voters deserve to know that their ballots will not be delayed. I want to see a public release of memos and directives from USPS leadership to postal workers about recent operational changes, including today's announcement. The Postmaster General and the White House still have more questions to answer.”
