Must I have a bond to do business?

Various business entities do need to have a bond on file with the Secretary of State. The Special Filings Unit of the Secretary of State's office would be able to assist you in determining whether a bond is required for your situation. You may contact the unit at (916) 653-3984.

If my business has more than one location, are separate bonds required for each address?

Currently, Job Listing Services require a separate bond for each location. All other businesses are not required to purchase separate bonds at this time.

Can you recommend a surety company where I may purchase my bond?

You may contact the Department of Insurance, Licensing Section, at (916) 322-3598 for information about companies that are licensed in California to sell surety bonds.

How much does it cost to get an auctioneer/auction company license?

There are no requirements to be licensed as an auctioneer or auction company. There is a requirement to have a $20,000 bond on file with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of State's fee for filing that bond is $30.00.
