Statutes of 2007, chapter 399 (AB 886 Runner) made several significant changes to notarial law, including the amendment changing the requirements of acknowledgments. (Civil Code section 1189.)
The identity of the person making the acknowledgment may no longer be established by personal knowledge alone and requires proof by satisfactory evidence. (Civil Code section 1185.) The certificate of acknowledgment (pdf ~41KB) must be executed under penalty of perjury and must be in the form set forth in Civil Code section 1189.
