Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Visit Sequoia High School; Speak at San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on National Voter Registration Day

SAN MATEO COUNTY – Secretary of State Alex Padilla will make two stops in San Mateo County on National Voter Registration Day which is Tuesday, September 26, 2017.

Secretary Padilla will speak at the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors meeting at 9:00 a.m. as they vote to adopt the education and outreach budget for the implementation of the Voter’s Choice Act. Under this new election model, beginning in 2018, all registered voters in San Mateo County will automatically be sent a ballot 28 days prior to Election Day. Voters will be able to return their ballot by mail, take it to a drop-off location, or cast it in-person at any vote center in the county.

Secretary Padilla will also visit Sequoia High School at 10:30 a.m. as part of High School Voter Education Weeks. Padilla will be joined by State Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin to discuss the importance of voter registration and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. Eligible 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote, and have their voter registration automatically become active when they turn 18. Secretary Padilla recently announced a new back-to-school pre-registration toolkit. The toolkit includes a new “Our Time is Now” PSA video urging 16- and 17- year olds to pre-register to vote

The California Education Code designates the last two full weeks in April and September to be High School Voter Education Weeks. This provides an opportunity for high schools and their students to partner with elections officials to promote civic education and participation on campus to inspire students to become lifelong voters and active citizens.
