California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Discuss Student Voter Participation at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to speak at a student forum on civic engagement and voting rights Wednesday, April 12 at 11:00am.

Secretary Padilla will discuss efforts to enhance civic engagement by modernizing elections and improving the voting experience. A student question-and-answer session will follow the Secretary’s presentation. California Senate Majority LeaderBill Monning (D-Carmel) will moderate the conversation. The non-partisan event is sponsored by the Cal Poly Political Science Department andAssociated Students, Inc.(ASI).

Last year, Secretary Padilla partnered with the California State University (CSU) system, and the California State Student Association (CSSA) via a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to underscore the importance of supporting student voter registration and education efforts across the 23 CSU campuses. In advance of the 2016 General Election, outreach efforts at Cal Poly engaged more than 4,500 students—20 percent of the student body—to register to vote, request an absentee ballot or sign up for reminders about upcoming elections.
