Secretary of State Padilla Releases Copy of Official Voter Information Guide for Public Comment

SACRAMENTO - Secretary of State Alex Padilla today made the November 6, 2018, General Official Voter Information Guide available for public review. The guide, which will be mailed to every voting household in California, includes candidate statements, arguments for and against Propositions 1 through 12*, and other important election information such as the Voter Bill of Rights and how to find your polling place. California’s Official Voter Information Guide is available in 10 languages – English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese, as well as American Sign Language.

“The choices we make as voters this November will shape our state and nation for years to come,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “During the General Election, Californians will vote on 11 propositions, elect a U.S. Senator, and a new Governor. It is crucial that all Californians make informed decisions at the ballot box. The Voter Information Guide includes candidate statements for statewide elected offices and US Senate, as well as nonpartisan analysis of each proposition from the Legislative Analyst’s Office.”

The guide will be available for the public to view from July 24 through August 13 at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/upcoming-elections/general-election-november-6-2018/public-display/ and at the Secretary of State’s offices in Sacramento and Los Angeles. During this public display period, anyone may challenge any portion of the Official Voter Information Guide in Sacramento Superior Court. On August 13, the guide will be finalized and printed.

NOTE: Only candidates for state wide constitutional offices who accept voluntary campaign spending limits are eligible to purchase a candidate statement in the Voter Information Guide. Candidates for statewide federal offices (such as the U.S. Senate) do not have to adhere to a spending limit to purchase a candidate statement.

The Secretary of State’s office mails the Official Voter Information Guide to all households that have at least one registered voter beginning September 27 and ending October 16. Audio versions and large print versions will be available as well. Additional hard copies of guides in each of the 10 languages can be requested from the Secretary of State’s Elections Division by calling (800) 345-VOTE (8683) or by email at vigfeedback@sos.ca.gov. American Sign Language videos of the ‘quick reference guide’ contained within the Voter Information Guide will be available online.

*On July 18, 2018, Proposition 9 was removed from the ballot by order of the California Supreme Court. (PDF)
