California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Releases Statement Regarding Reports That the Federal Government Plans to Send Election Monitors to California

Sacramento, Calif. – Today, California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., released the following statement regarding reports that the federal government plans to send election monitors to California.

“I am aware of the United States Department of Justice’s plan to deploy federal monitors to five California counties. The Department of Justice has not provided our office with any justification for the need to deploy federal monitors to these five counties, in what is a nonfederal special election.

California reaffirms what has long been true: our elections are secure, transparent, and administered by Californians for Californians in accordance with state and federal law. California will continue to safeguard every voter’s right to participate freely and confidently in the State’s special election, without intimidation.

We will not permit tactics masquerading as oversight to erode voter confidence or intimidate Californians. Our voters have earned the right to cast their ballots free from surveillance or interference—from anyone. In California, election integrity is not a talking point; it’s a practice built on decades of professionalism and public trust. We intend to keep it that way.

My office will take every step necessary to protect the rights of our voters to participate—without interference—in the November 4, 2025 Statewide Special Election.”
