California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Presented the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award to Cameryn Mabry and Owen Lefebvre
Sacramento, Calif. – California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., presented the esteemed John Lewis Youth Leadership Award to Cameryn Mabry and Owen Lefebvre in recognition of their individual outstanding contributions to civic engagement.
The John Lewis Youth Leadership Award, established by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in 2021, honors the legacy of Congressman John Lewis by celebrating individuals under 25 who demonstrate exceptional commitment to civic service and leadership. Each Secretary of State may select two recipients annually for their state.
Cameryn Mabry was selected for her exemplary record of public service focused on addressing social issues. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a collegiate sorority founded to promote academic excellence and commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and addressing current social issues. Mabry has served as a young women’s facilitator at Berkeley Mt. Zion Church; an intern with the Key Counsel, P.C. Law Firm; a field representative for Assemblymember Anamarie Avila Farias; and with 2nd Call, a community-based organization designed to save lives by reducing violence and assisting in the personal development of high- risk individuals. Mabry earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from California State University Los Angeles and is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
Owen Lefebvre was selected for his exceptional record of public service focused on voter engagement. He is a political science major at California State University, Sacramento, where he is a member of the General Education Honors Program and on the Dean’s Honors List. He is a member of the Pi Kappa Phi, Incorporated, Fraternity, and serves as President of the Interfraternity Council, where he launched Sacramento State’s first Greek Voter Registration Drive. Lefebvre is a member of the Sacramento State College Democrats; has served on the Democratic Party of Orange County Central Committee; and has worked at the City of Anaheim’s Mayor’s Office. He currently works in the California Secretary of State’s Executive Outreach and Education Department supporting statewide voter engagement initiatives such as the Students Voter Project and Ballot Bowl competition.
Secretary Weber expressed her appreciation for Mabry’s and Lefebvre’s public service accomplishments noting "Camryn Mabry and Owen Lefebvre are outstanding young individuals whose dedication to public service is a testament to the positive impact young leaders can have on society. Camryn’s work to address social issues helps move the needle on social justice issues and Owen’s efforts to expand voter engagement encourages participation in our democracy. I am proud of both of these young leaders and look forward to seeing how their efforts continue to improve the quality of life in their communities."
