California State Archives and Sacramento State University Present 'Struggles Against Injustice: A Historical Timeline of Reparations' Exhibit"

SACRAMENTO, CA – In recognition of Black History Month, the California State Archives, in collaboration with California State University, Sacramento, has unveiled a new exhibit: "Struggles Against Injustice: A Historical Timeline of Reparations."

This exhibit delves into the complex history of reparations movements, featuring a detailed timeline and a selection of documents, photographs and artifacts from the State Archives' vast collections, offering insights into the various efforts to address injustices throughout California's history.

The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the exhibit gallery on the 4th floor of the California State Archives located at 1020 “O” Street, Sacramento. The exhibit will be open through February 2025.

“Each narrative is a crucial part of our shared history, illustrating our resilience and the ongoing pursuit of justice in California,” said California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. "This exhibit chronicles the enduring struggle against injustices, from slavery in California and the Indian Wars to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the battle against segregation and discrimination, the activism of the Black Panthers, and the recent work of the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals."

"This exhibit pays tribute to the lasting influence of individuals who have devoted themselves to promoting change and equality within our communities," said Natalia Visante, Acting State Archivist. “We are proud to act as stewards of artifacts that tell their stories.”

In 2020, Secretary Weber, then serving in the California State Assembly, sponsored Assembly Bill 3121, establishing a nine-member Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans, with a focus on descendants of enslaved individuals in the United States.

The State Archives is a division of the California State Secretary of State’s office.
