Secretary of State Releases First Report of Registration Ahead of the November 3, 2020 General Election

SACRAMENTO, CA – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla today released the first voter registration report for the November 3, 2020 General Election. The report shows that 20,921,513 Californians were registered to vote as of July 3, 2020. This represents an increase of 2,836,514 registered voters since the Report of Registration at a similar point in the last presidential election cycle (July 7, 2016). 83.49% of eligible Californians are registered to vote. This is the highest percentage of eligible Californians registered to vote heading into a General Election in the past 68 years.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, California is on track to reach another registration milestone," Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. "California will reach 21 million registered voters before the November General Election —extending our current state record for voter registration.”

“This fall, elections officials will be mailing ballots directly to all active registered voters. Make sure your voter registration, especially your address, is up to date, so that you receive your ballot timely. Do not wait. Election officials will begin printing their initial ballot mailing lists next month. To confirm your registration information, visit VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov. To update your registration or register for the first time, visit RegisterToVote.ca.gov."

October 19 is the traditional voter registration deadline for the November 3, 2020 General Election. If an eligible Californian misses the October 19 deadline, they can complete the same day voter registration process and cast their vote that day. However, this option is only available at county elections offices and in-person voting locations.
