Secretary of State Alex Padilla Announces Partnership with MemorialCare Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA – Secretary of State Alex Padilla has announced a new Democracy at Work partnership with MemorialCare Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach. Through this partnership, the Secretary of State’s office will provide materials for Miller to disseminate amongst their staff, patients, and visitors that contains information encouraging individuals to register to vote. Miller is a leader on the Long Beach Complete Count Committee and is committed to providing educational and outreach materials that reinforce the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.

“Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach provides world-class care to thousands of patients,” said Secretary of State Alex Padilla. “As the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary approaches, it is more important than ever to make sure that people from all walks of life are reminded to registered to vote and cast their ballot by Election Day. In addition, it is equally important that every Californian is counted in the 2020 Census. This new Democracy at Work partnership will expand the scope of our outreach to make sure that all Californians are prepared to participate in their civic responsibilities in 2020.”

“We’re proud to be recognized as an official partner of Democracy at Work,” says Graham Tse, M.D., chief medical officer, MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. “As a hospital, we’re committed to ensuring our patients, families and employees have access to information that empowers them to register to vote and participate in government programs, like the Census. Starting in April, we will work to ensure our patients have access to information and computers, where they can participate in the census electronically and provide data that will impact our community for the next decade.”

With more than 1600 employees, Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Long Beach is one of only eight freestanding children’s hospitals in California, and 70 percent of their patients are Medi-Cal recipients.  In addition, Miller Children’s has 14,900 pediatric admissions and facilitates 5,700 births each year, making it one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country. Miller provides specialty care for women and children and features eight major Centers of Excellence. While directly serving both LA County and Orange County, Miller also cares for patients from across the state.

This is the latest partnership in the Secretary of State’s nonpartisan Democracy at Work initiative. Through Democracy at Work, the Secretary of State’s office partners with the business community, local governments, and nonprofit sector employers to promote voter registration and civic engagement to employees and customers.
