Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Announce Voter Pre-Registration Milestone at Grant High School

VAN NUYS, CA – Secretary of State Alex Padilla will be joined by LAUSD Board Member Scott Schmerelson, and students at Grant High School in Van Nuys on Thursday, February 6, to announce a new voter pre-registration milestone. Since September 2016, 16- and 17- year-olds in California have been able to pre-register to vote. Once pre-registered, their registration automatically becomes activate when they turn 18.

Secretary Padilla will also hold an assembly at Grant High School, ahead of the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary, to discuss the importance of voting and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. The Los Angeles City Clerk and Secretary of State staff will be onsite help students register and pre-register to vote as well as to provide students with information on the Census.

During his visit, Secretary Padilla will be encouraging all eligible 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote. Secretary Padilla will also be highlighting the importance of ensuring a complete and accurate count of all Californians for the 2020 Census.

In 2018, Secretary Padilla launched a High School Civic Engagement Portal, HighSchool.sos.ca.gov. High school students can learn more about pre-registration, find out how to be a student poll worker, get resources to host a Student Mock Election on their campus, and learn how to organize voter registration drives on their campuses.
