California Secretary of State Alex Padilla Urges Californians to Register to Vote on National Voter Registration Day

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today is National Voter Registration Day, and Secretary of State Alex Padilla is encouraging all Californians to ensure they are registered ahead of the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary Election.

"California's primary is moving to prime time in March 2020, and record turnout is expected. Californians need to be registered to vote--at their current address and with their preferred political party preference.  I am encouraging all Californians check their status and register to vote now. It only takes a few minutes online to verify your registration, re-register, or even register for the very first time."

There are more than 20 million Californians registered to vote—the most ever in California’s history. However, there are still approximately 5 million eligible, but unregistered California citizens.

Californians must update their voter registration any time they: move, change their name, or wish to change their political party preference. Political Party Preference is particularly critical ahead of the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary. Voters registered with a political party may only vote for that party’s presidential candidates in the primary election.

Californians can register to vote and update their registration online at: https://registertovote.ca.gov/.

Californians can check their voter registration status using the "My Voter Status" tool at: https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/.

Los Angeles High School Visit
Secretary Padilla will kick off National Voter Registration Day with a visit to Felicitas & Gonzalo Mendez High School in Los Angeles from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Telemundo and Power California are partnering with the Secretary of State’s office at the event to encourage registration among 18-year-olds and pre-registration among 16- and 17-year-olds. The Secretary will be joined by LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner and LAUSD Board Member Monica Garcia.

San Diego Padres Game
At 7:00 p.m., Secretary Padilla will throw the first pitch for the San Diego Padres game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and encourage everyone attending the game to register to vote on their mobile devices. The Padres will be featuring voter registration reminders via video in stadium and through social media.

Sacramento Secretary of State Office Voter Registration Opportunity
The Secretary of State’s office will also have voter registration materials available to the public from 9:00am to 4:00pm in the March Fong Eu Secretary of State Building lobby in Sacramento.
