MEDIA ADVISORY

Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Visit Luther Burbank High School

SACRAMENTO - Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit Luther Burbank High School for a voter registration rally and student mock election on Tuesday, May 1.

Secretary Padilla will discuss the importance of voter registration and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. Secretary of State staff will help students register and pre-register to vote. Students will also participate in a mock election.

This year, Sacramento will be one of five counties modernizing their elections by adopting the California Voter’s Choice Act. With a more flexible and convenient model, voters will be able to choose how, when, and where they cast their ballot. As the June 5 Primary is fast approaching, students turning 18 on or before June 5 will have an opportunity to register and cast their first ballot this summer. 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote, and have their registration automatically activated when they turn 18.

Secretary Padilla recently announced that over 100,000 pre-registrations have been completed by 16- and 17-year olds since the launch of the pre-registration program in September 2016. He also launched a High School Civic Engagement Portal, HighSchool.sos.ca.gov. High school students can learn more about pre-registration, find out how to be a student poll worker, get resources to host a Student Mock Election on their campus, and learn how to organize voter registration drives on their campuses.
