California Secretary of State Alex Padilla Statement on Trump’s Latest Demeaning Comments on Immigrants

SACRAMENTO – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s latest demeaning comments about immigrants.

“First ‘rapists and murderers.’ Then demeaning Latin American and African nations. Now referring to undocumented immigrants as ‘animals.’ This is Trump’s view of immigrants. When the president spews hate speech it emboldens racists and fans the flames of intolerance — and we see the consequences of this dangerous behavior every day in our communities and on social media. With his offensive, reprehensible, and vile remarks, Trump has again demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President of the United States.”

“Every official, regardless of party, must condemn his repulsive language.”

"I’m further appalled by the California representatives who sat with the president during this exchange and chose to remain silent in the face of these dehumanizing attacks on immigrants, including their constituents. We have no choice but to interpret their silence as complicity.”

“The American people deserve better than a president who sows hate and representatives who enable it. Our children are watching. We cannot allow this behavior to be normalized.”
