Record 19.4 million Californians Now Registered to Vote
SACRAMENTO – Secretary of State Alex Padilla released the final Report of Registration prior to the November 8, 2016 General Election. A record 19,411,771 Californians are registered to vote. The Report of Registration is a compilation of voter registration numbers reported by California’s 58 county elections offices. The report reflects registration data through October 24, 2016, which was the final day for Californians to register to vote in the November 8, 2016 General Election.
“Heading into the last Presidential Election 18.2 million Californians were registered to vote—today over 19.4 million Californians are registered voters,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said.
“2016 is truly a historic year and California continues to break records. As Election Day approaches, a record 19.4 million Californians are registered and eligible to cast a ballot. 78.04% of eligible Californians are registered to vote. This also represents the highest percentage of eligible California citizens registered to vote heading into a General Election in 20 years.”
“Our office has partnered with local elections officials, businesses, community groups, and even professional sports teams throughout California to help a record number of Californians register to vote. Reminders from social media networks and the popularity of online voter registration also helped fuel this year’s voter registration surge,” Padilla added.
