Secretary of State Alex Padilla Appoints James Schwab Chief Deputy

SACRAMENTO – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced the appointment of James Schwab as Chief Deputy Secretary of State, effective today. His appointment comes after the retirement of longtime Padilla adviser and former Chief Deputy Bill Mabie.

“James has been instrumental in advancing important voting rights and election modernization initiatives including California Motor Voter and the Voter’s Choice Act,” said Secretary of State Padilla. “His knowledge of the agency, the legislative process, and his extensive network in Sacramento will be valuable as I begin my second term.”

Schwab, 39, most recently served as Deputy Secretary of State for Policy and Planning. Previously he served as Chief of Legislative Affairs. Prior to the Secretary of State’s office, he worked for eight years in the California Legislature, including as a Legislative Consultant for then-State Senator Alex Padilla.

A Sacramento area native, Schwab graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in International Relations. He lives in Sacramento with his wife Alma Perez and their sons Santiago and Carlos. Perez is the Senior Consultant for the State Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee.
