Midnight Deadline to Register to Vote for November 6, 2018 General Election

SACRAMENTO – Today, October 22 is the deadline for Californians to register to vote or update their voter registration information for the November 6, 2018 General Election if they want to vote at their regular polling place or vote by mail.

“Californians have until midnight tonight to register to vote or update their voter registration," Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “If you have moved or changed your name, you need to re-register. Online voter registration is quick and easy at RegisterToVote.ca.gov. The voter registration website is mobile friendly, so you can even register from your smartphone or tablet.”

“If you are unsure of your voter registration status, take a moment to check it at VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov. This election will have a major impact on our nation, our state, and our local communities in the coming years--make sure your voice is heard.”

Californians can register to vote, or update their registration information on the Secretary of State’s official voter registration website: RegisterToVote.ca.gov. Online voter registration is available in 10 languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese.

Paper voter registration cards are available at most government offices, including libraries and post offices. Paper voter registration cards must be postmarked on or before the October 22 deadline.

Californians must re-register to vote if:

  • They move to a new permanent residence,
  • They change their name, or
  • Want to change their choice of political party.

Voter Registration Deadline and Conditional Voter Registration

October 22 is the deadline to register to vote or update voter registration information for the November 6, 2018 General Election if you want to vote at your regular polling place or vote by mail. However, California citizens who do not register or update their voter registration information by the October 22 deadline have a new option, called conditional voter registration.

Eligible citizens who miss the October 22 deadline can go to their county elections office or a designated satellite location to register and vote. Their ballots will be counted once the county office has completed the voter registration verification process. Voters can complete the conditional voter registration process from October 23 all the way through Election Day on November 6.

Special Note: Voters in Madera, Napa, Nevada, Sacramento, and San Mateo counties can access conditional voter registration at any Vote Center in their county. These counties are adopting the Voter’s Choice Act, to learn more visit: http://voterschoice.sos.ca.gov
