Secretary of State Padilla Statement on US Supreme Court Nomination

SACRAMENTO – Today, President Obama nominated United States D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland as his nominee to serve as justice of the United States Supreme Court. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement:

“I urge the Senate to fulfill its constitutional obligations to grant Judge Garland a full and fair hearing and a vote on his nomination.”

“Several cases now pending before the Supreme Court deserve consideration and resolution by the full court. These cases touch upon a number of issues, including women’s reproductive health rights, the Affordable Care Act, and immigration—issues of considerable importance to Californians.”

“Notably, the Supreme Court is currently considering voting rights questions that, if left unresolved, could undermine the bedrock principle of ‘one person-one vote.’ This principle dictates that everyone should be counted when legislative districts are drawn.”
