New California Voter Registration
Numbers Show Steady Gains of Unaffiliated Voters

SACRAMENTO - Statewide data published by Secretary of State Debra Bowen today show 17,660,486 Californians are registered to vote, 21.1 percent of whom are voters without a party preference – an uptick since the last gubernatorial primary.

The complete 60-day Report of Registration, which includes voter registration data for a variety of political subdivisions, is at http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ror/ror-pages/60day-primary-2014. The report reflects data gathered 60 days before the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary Election, with updates to voter registration rolls in California’s 58 counties including the removal of registrants who have died, moved out of state, or have been determined to be ineligible to vote, as well as the addition of new registrants.

"The clock is ticking and the May 19 voter registration deadline will be here before you know it," said Secretary Bowen, the state’s chief elections officer. "If you aren’t one of the 17.7 million Californians already registered to vote, take five minutes at the newly designed RegisterToVote.ca.gov which is now offered in 10 languages."

The state voter registration application is online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov and available on paper at many post offices, public libraries, California Department of Motor Vehicle offices, and other government offices. County elections officials process registration updates and maintain voter records. People can check their voter registration status by contacting their county elections office; a convenient portal is at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/registration-status.

While the statewide voter registration database is updated daily, California law requires voter registration updates 154, 60 and 15 days before each statewide primary election, and 60 days and 15 days before each statewide general election. One "off-year" update is published in February of years with no regularly scheduled statewide election. After the 58 county elections officials certify their voter data, the Secretary of State compiles all data into a statewide report and offers various dissections by political district and political party.

The updated registration totals for the seven qualified political parties and voters who have no political party preference follow, along with the comparable data from four years ago.
