The Elections Division, Office of the California Secretary of State, certifies candidates for the state ballot, places ballot measures on the ballot, provides voter registration cards and coordinates voter outreach drives, certifies voting systems, produces publications relating to elections and voting, certifies the qualification of new political parties, conducts special elections, investigates allegations of voter and registration fraud, reports election results, and administers state and federal elections law in California, including the National Voter Registration Act (also known as Motor Voter) and the Voting Rights Act.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) in Washington, D.C. receives campaign disclosure statements for federal elections and administers laws regulating the disclosure of campaign financing for federal elections.  This includes campaigns in California for the U. S. House of Representatives, U. S. Senate, President, and Vice President.

The Political Reform Audit Program of the California Franchise Tax Board conducts audits of selected state and local candidates and campaign committees. The Audit Program also conducts audits of selected lobbying firms and lobbyist employers registered with the Secretary of State. (This Program does not have a website.)
