Gordon Scott | Aviation Chief Petty Officer | Larry McFarland | I dedicate my vote to WWII Navy Veteran and friend, Gordon Scott. I had the privilege and honor to accompany Gordon as his "Guardian" on a trip to Washington D.C. with the Central Valley Honor Flight. It was during this trip that I learned of Gordon's heroism and service to our country. After Navy Boot Camp, Gordon's first assignment was the USS Arizona. After his first cruise at sea, he was transferred to the Aircraft Carrier, USS Lexington. On December 6, 1941, the USS Lexington sailed out of Pearl Harbor. The Lexington had to return to Pearl Harbor on December 10 for fuel and departed again the next day. One can only imagine what it felt like to see the destruction and realize the loss of life at Pearl Harbor. Gordon served on the Lexington until May 8, 1942. On that day at 11:20 a.m., in the South China Sea, the Lexington came under torpedo and dive bomber attacks, but the Lexington continued to launch and recover aircraft. Two torpedo and two bomb hits eventually resulted in uncontrollable fires. At 17:07 p.m. the order was given to abandon ship. Gordon was among 2770 crew members who were rescued from the water by several U.S. Navy ships. Gordon went on to serve on the Aircraft Carrier USS Suwanee until the end of the war. Gordon's last assignment was to the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas. I salute not only Gordon, but all of our Veterans and Active Duty men and women who sacrifice every day for our freedoms, including the right to vote. | Kingsburg, California | 1940-1946 |

1st Lt. Ken Ballard kia 5-30 | 2nd Lieutenant | Joan Keith | Having been a high school teacher for over 40 years, I have known many students. Yet, I have rarely been so deeply affected by any as much as the son of a former student of mine. Ken's story and his life has struck a deep chord with me. I did not know Ken as it was his mother who was my student, but from Karen's work with the Gold Star Mothers, I have come to know and admire Ken. I feel it is my loss that I did not know him. It is men like Ken who exemplify the best of America. And it is for us honor them for all they have done and for their sacrifices. From my grandfather's service in WWI to Ken's service now, men like these deserve the respect and thanks of a grateful population. They do have mine. | Mountain View | 9 years |

Sheril R. Miner | PFC | Nicole Russell | My grandfather Sheril Miner served during the Korean War for the US Army beginning at the age of seventeen. While deployed he was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, the latter being the cause of his honorable discharge. His pride and dedication for our country has instilled a personal duty I feel within myself to vote and believe in the importance of having my voice heard and actively participating in making our country a better place. A girl could not ask for a better grandfather. He was friendly and warm, always genuinely caring for the needs of anyone who could use his help. His time in the military especially allowed this quality of his to shine. He (along with other men in his company) was awarded the Bronze Star for bringing in wounded troops that he was told by his superiors were in too dangerous of a situation to retrieve. After he was discharged he continued serving his country through community service. My family could not be more proud of his memory and the legacy of caring, giving, and duty to his country that he has left behind. Surviving him are his wife Melvie Miner, daughters Juanita Miner and Debra Abrao, son-in-law Anthony Abrao, granddaughters Glenda Feraud and Nicole Russell, and grandson Ronald Abrao. He will live on forever in our hearts. | Roseburg, OR

Somehow, he went back to college and received his degree in Criminology. He wanted to help children who had fallen through the cracks like he and his brother did. At now 68 1/2, he is fighting the battles of PTSD. I give him credit for trying to keep himself fit by playing basketball 4-5 days a week. He will play until the body gives out because it has saved him! It's his one chance of achieving camaraderie with those he likely wouldn't trust otherwise. Felix J. Martinez Jr. | Sergeant | Eva Martinez | Dear husband: As the time has gone by during these last 21 yrs of our marriage, I can't help but to reflect back to the time when you served our country within that time. I stand at your side saluting those that have given their lives to protect our freedom, those that are still standing as veterans, and those currently in harms way fighting battles only known to them. Not having you around for my first pregnancy was difficult, but I understood that your deployment during the Bosnia conflict was one of a greater service than you helping me through my morning sickness. I recall waiting anxiously for your calls, to hear your voice and laughter at the other end of the phone. My heart goes out to all spouses whom anxiously wait for their loved ones to call home. To all the brothers that I've gained via the Army, I can't find enough words to express how blessed and honored I am to call you my brother for life and to know that if and when I need any of you, all I have to do is pick up the phone, and you each know to do the same with me! Fernando, Ernesto, Raul, Don, Danny and Ralph, you forever have my respect and love as veterans of the Army, HOOOAH! Blessings and protection over all the veterans around the world, from every branch and every walk of life! Humbly, Army veteran wife, and forever servant to my veteran Army brothers in heart. | Stockton, CA | 1992-2001 |

Willard Clarence Markuson | WT-1 | Richard H Markuson | My uncle Bill joined the US Navy in 1939 to serve his new country. He was killed in action on 11 December 1944 while serving aboard the USS Reid DD-369. Bill had only recently been transferred to the Reid after service on the USS Haraden (DD-585). Harden survived the war. The Reid supported air strikes against Wake Island and after patrols off Leyte, Philippine Islands, in November she steamed to Ormoc Bay, Leyte. She supported landings there in December, and escorted the damaged Lamson (DD-367) toward Leyte Gulf. Escorting reinforcements for Ormoc Bay near Surigao Straits 11 December, Reid destroyed seven Japanese planes, before she sank from repeated kamikaze crashes. Her 150 survivors were picked up by landing craft in her convoy. Uncle Bill was not one of the lucky 150. Reid received seven battle stars for World War II service. Bill received several posthumous awards for his service. Ernest Phillips | Chief Master Sergeant at Travis Air Force Base, CA | Thomas L. Watson | We dedicate this to Ernie Phillips who on Dec. 1942 had been promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was ordered to serve as an aerial left waist gunner with the aircrew of Capt. Hiram C. Skogmo with the 568th Bomb Squadron part of the 390th Bomb Group. His first plane, it’s nickname which was painted on the side of the fuselage by the aircrew, “Six Nights in Telergma (Arabian Nights), was a B-17G flying fortress one of the most famous planes of World War II and also one of the most dangerous as Ernie was soon to learn as this plane was to make only 3 combat missions before it was shot down. Ernie and other prisoners were taken to the German Evaluation Center, Dulag Luft at Oberursel, Germany where all American aircrews would first be sent for processing. Here they would be strip searched, placed in solitary confinement and interrogated by the Germans. The interrogators would try to break down the prisoners minds to find out facts about Allied air strength, crew members and any other personal facts that could be used against other prisoners to learn military information Ernie gave them his name, rank and serial number as required by the Geneva Convention and was sent to a prisoner of war camp, possibly Stalag 17B in Krems, Austria. Ernie never spoke again about being a prisoner of war to anyone, as if it never happened. He was our hero! | Vacaville, CA | 28 years and 6 months |

Carolyn (Brashears) Higdon | Sheila Higdon | I want to take a moment and thank my Mom for her service to this great country. Though my Mom was accepted to college, she instead wanted to honor her Dad's memory (my Grandfather had served in Normandy; surviving overseas, dying instead on American soil in order to save someone else's life), by joining the Army. My Mom was well respected while stationed at Fort Ord and would have made a great career "WAC". However, being pregnant and her husband in Korea, she was separated out and honorably discharged. Several years later, she would embark on a 25 year career in Civil Service at both the Veterans Administration Hospital - Martinez and Naval Hospital - Oakland. I remember her taking me with her to work many times as a young teen where I would sit amongst the Vietnam Veterans and chat with them. My Mom is an amazing woman, as she was also a Navy wife, often home alone while Dad was deployed. I come from strong stock and am so grateful to my Mom for her example and strength. Thank you Mom!!! I love you! | Sikeston, Missouri | 2 years

Malcolm Higdon | Chief Petty Officer | Sheila Higdon | I want to publically thank my Dad for devoting 27 years of his life in service to this great country. My Dad's service in the Navy began between his Junior and Senior years of High School when he completed his basic training in the Great Lakes. He served during the Vietnam Era, separated from service for a while, and then went back in as ended up getting deployed during Desert Storm. Some of my earliest memories are of him in uniform, kissing us goodbye. Despite missed birthdays, holidays, and other family events, he always made certain my Mom (Army vet) and us kids knew how much he loved us. Wherever he was at around the world, he called if he could. My Dad is my hero.....he is an example of all that's right and good in this country. For his 70th birthday party, we found pictures of him in probably 80 countries; some that I didn't even know about, as he couldn't tell us at the time where he was. I love you my Dad and so appreciate the legacy you and Mom have given to us kids. | Sikeston, Missouri | 27 years |
