In partnership with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the California Historical Records Advisory Board works to serve the needs of California constituencies involved in the management and preservation of historical records. Under federal regulations, the State Board has two principal roles:
- Acts as coordinating body for historical record activities statewide
- Reviews NHPRC grants from California organizations and makes recommendations to the National Commission.

California Historical Records Statewide Planning Project
In 2000-2001, a statewide planning and assessment project was undertaken by the California Historical Records Advisory Board (CHRAB) to develop a strategic plan for the management of the state's documentary heritage. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the project consultant, Dr. Gabriele Carey of History Associates Incorporated, focused on identifying the needs and concerns relating to state government records, local government records, and historical records repositories, and on preparing a list of recommendations for improving the care of historical materials. Information for the reports was derived from surveys received from hundreds of cities, counties, and historical records repositories, from discussions conducted with representatives of state government, and from a series of town hall meetings held throughout the state.
