General Information

The California State Archives collects, catalogs, preserves, and provides access to the historic records of state government and some local governments. The Archives also administers an oral history program which documents state government policies through interviews with state government officials and others.

 

Hours

The Archives Research Room is open Monday through Friday
9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and is closed on state holidays. Materials are not retrieved or copied after 3:30 although the room remains open for other services during this time.

**The Archives Research Room (including the Root Cellar Family History Library) is also open the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 4:00. Next open Saturday will be June 7, 2008.**

Services and Fees

Photocopies - $0.25 per page

Certification - $5.00 per document or file

FAX responses - $1.00 per page

Scans - $10.00 per scan plus $5.00 to copy to a CD

Photographic reproductions - $10.00 per image service charge plus applicable reproduction costs

Other outside duplication (e.g. oversized maps, drawings, etc.) - $10.00 per order preparation fee

Audio recordings - $15.00 per cassette tape

Video recordings - $20.00 per VHS cassette tape (can be transferred to a DVD for the same price)

DVD recordings - $10.00 per DVD

Microfilm duplication - $25.00 per 16mm or 35mm roll

The California State Archives accepts checks, money orders and credit cards (VISA and MasterCard). Although available staff time is limited, there is currently no charge for research services.

Location

Sacramento, CA 95814.

The entrance to the Archives is located at the corner of 10th and "O" Streets in downtown Sacramento. Several parking garages are located nearby on both 10th and 11th Streets between "O" and "P"; metered parking is also available.

From the west: Business-80 (Capital City Freeway) to I-5 north. Take "Q" Street exit to 10th Street then left.

From the east: Business-80 (Capital City Freeway) to the 10th Street exit and right on 10th Street.

From the south: I-5 north to "Q" Street exit. Proceed east on "Q", then left on 10th Street. Or from Highway 99 take the Business-80 west to San Francisco exit. Proceed to the 10th Street exit and right on 10th Street.

From the north: I-5 south to "Q" Street exit. Proceed east on "Q", then left on 10th Street.

Via Light Rail: Get off at the Archives Plaza stop.

 

Facilities Information

The State Archives occupies a new, state-of-the-art facility one block south of the State Capitol as part of a Secretary of State office complex. Completed in 1995, the 170,000 sq.ft. building was designed to meet the needs of the Archives for the next 50 years. Six floors of environmentally controlled stacks, including a number of specialized vaults, house the Archives growing collections. The new building also includes greatly expanded and improved facilities for preservation and research use of archival materials. A full service cafe is located on the second floor of the complex.
