Secretary of State Bowen Publishes First Voter
Registration Data for June Primary Election Cycle

SACRAMENTO - As the 2014 election season gets under way, the percentage of registered voters stating no party preference has increased from this same time four years ago, according to new statewide data published by the California Secretary of State. Since the last comparable Report of Registration in February 2010, California implemented a top-two primary system in which candidates for a state constitutional office, state legislative office, or U.S. congressional office are listed on one ballot.

"Voter registration is up from four years ago, and that number will continue to climb as the May 19 registration deadline nears," said Secretary of State Debra Bowen, California’s chief elections official. "Registering to vote is easier than ever now that voters have the ability to apply online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov."

The report includes data gathered 154 days before the June 3, 2014, Statewide Direct Primary Election and reflects updates to voter registration rolls, including the removal of registrants who have passed away, moved out of state, or have been determined to be ineligible to vote, as well as the addition of new registrants. The complete December 31, 2013, Report of Registration is at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ror/ror-pages/154day-primary-2014.

By law, voter registration updates must occur 154, 60 and 15 days before each statewide primary election, and 60 days and 15 days before each statewide general election. There is one “off-year” update released in February of years with no regularly scheduled statewide election. After the 58 county elections officials certify their voter data, the Secretary of State compiles all data into a statewide report and offers various dissections by political district and political party preference.

The registration totals for the seven qualified political parties and voters who have no political party preference are:
